Despised Things Made Loved

“Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.” (1 Corinthians 1:27-29 NIV) When I read through these verses a couple weeks ago, one phrase resonated with me: despised things. “Despised things” in this verse refers to the things this world despises but God uses for His glory.

Is your branch connected to the vine?

First and foremost, I want to say a Happy New Year from all of the writers here at All The More! We are so thankful for each and every one of you! As I ring in 2017, sitting at home watching the ball drop, I can’t help but to process and pick apart all that 2016 was for me. And if I’m being honest, it wasn’t really all that great. It wasn’t horrible, (I’m sure others had a much more trying year than I had), but it wasn’t exactly great either. I was unemployed for majority of the summer. I lost my last grandparent and a very close family friend. The stress of an ongoing complicated living situation was emotionally draining. Add in all of the commitments I agreed to; from leading a small group, serving on the board of an academic honor society, and being involved in a young […]

Waiting and Wading

I’m currently wading in the most difficult season of my life. Waves the size of all my hopes, dreams, and fears threaten to drown me everyday. Every day, I am reminded of the safety in not trying and in the predictable comfort of a life that requires no lifeguard’s watch, no fear, and little excitement. Sometimes, I think it might have been better if I had chosen a safer path, something that required less of me. I could have stood on the shoreline and looked out at the people who dared to swim. After all, it’s pretty hard to drown when you’re standing on the sand.

Grasping for Grace

You know those days where you just cannot do anything right? You upset people you love and care about, you mess up on a task at work, you didn’t go to the gym like you had originally planned and instead went straight home for the 8th day in a row? I’ve had those days for what feels like weeks. I end up discouraged, upset, and frustrated with myself. I come home and talk about how I wish my day had a different result and my husband quietly says, “I wish you would give yourself a lot more grace. You shouldn’t talk about yourself that way.”

If God brings you to it, He’ll bring you through it

When I think about my life, and all the steps that it’s taken to get me to where I am now, it’s been nothing short of a miracle. There were so many ups and downs –moments of pain, and moments of deep joy and peace. Lately, the Lord has asked me to reflect. To stop what I am begging Him for and see all that He has already done in my life.

He is Well Pleased

When I started college, God met me where I was at and I was pierced by the Gospel. My life has been changed ever since. The more I walk with Jesus, the more I see my constant need for Him and His power in my life. I’m humbled as I still struggle with relying on my own strength. I know that I can’t earn His love or approval, but when I take a step back, I often find myself living that way. Yet God is changing my heart and reminding me where my identity lies. In Him and His Gospel. Not in my works.

What do I have to be thankful for?

May the Lord continually open our eyes to really see the greater work He’s doing in, through, and around us. And may He deepen our knowledge and understanding of His character everyday, so we can enjoy the sweet abundance of an intimate relationship with Him.

The MOST Nourishing Diet!

Lately my busyness has resulted in somewhat of an odd eating pattern. If I find time in the morning I will drink one teaspoon of milk. During my 8-5, I think about being able to drink another teaspoon of milk, but who has time for food in the middle of a work day? At the end of the day, if I am lucky, I find a short moment for dinner and I will have a teaspoon of honey.

Does being zealous for God mean I have to always be excited?

Now that it’s November, it’s finally culturally appropriate to get excited about Christmas!! In honor of that, let me kick off this blog with a reference from the classic Christmas movie Elf. When Buddy the Elf is in the department store and they announce that Santa is coming, Buddy SCREAMS and jumps up and down with hysterical excitement! (For your enjoyment, here’s the scene).
