“To the world you may be one person…”
To the world I am one person. I am humbled every time I remember that I am the only person on this Earth who even attempts to worship myself. This reminder serves to destruct the thought pattern of making everything about me. “You were made from dust and to dust you shall return.” (Genesis 3:19, Ecclesiastes 3:20)
“…but to one person you may be the world.”
In a culture that lauds #relationshipgoals, we have been taught that if we find this one person, we will be made complete. Maybe our self-kingdoms will have at least one follower! Right? Even if early in a relationship the constant stream of endorphins convince us that this person is perfect and considers us perfect, we are in for a rude awakening. We will inevitably meet each other’s faults.
We are not made whole by anyone but God himself.
Maybe the dust verse is harsh to you. But that truth remains alive, right alongside this reason for His death on the Cross: We are already being made perfect by Him, who is the only one who can love us perfectly. That’s how much we are loved by our Holy Redeemer. (1 John 4:9-10)
In response to this truth, we can loosen the grip of seeking for a person to complete us, and instead lay at the cross remembering that Jesus already is our world, our everything.
